SPASMOSLOP @ Make It Up Club - 02/08/2016

This Tuesday at MIUC is a torrential onslaught of scaturient sonics, as three solo cacophonists dredge through the atramentously anarchistic realm of astringent dissonance to adjure and agitate perceptible frequential extents into audibly delectable textural densities.

Spasmoslop spews forth the genus of genius only attainable via the persistent auricular ingestion of sublimated brutalities, augmented with anodic accretions and the requisite gargling of glass, for the umpteenth consecutive year conjuring the consummatest in electro-oral noise.

Bleach Boys summons corrupted quixoticisms from the thresholds of the analogue apocalypse, sparking shimmering sensatory paroxysms from antediluvian playback apparatuses and excavating sublimely stygian resonances dripping in serene restlessness.

And Scumwitch conveys ceremonially cathartic caterwauls of cut-n-waste chaos cobbled from deafening detrital dystopia, shredding oscillatory spectra into clamorous turbulences that ruthlessly cleave through speaker cones and cerebella alike.

HOLY BONER @ MIUC 18th Birthday! - 05/01/2016

The Make It Up Club has been committed to nurturing, presenting and promoting avant-garde improvised music and sound performance since 1998, making it one of the longest continually-running improv nights in the world. 2016 sees our Club reach the numerically momentous 18-year milestone, so we cordially invite you to partake in the sort of annual aleatoric festivities befitting an improv night who’s just reached legal voting/tattooing/drinking age. The Club is undeniably a sonically variegated beast, so four diverse assemblages of stupendous spontaneous soundmakers have offered to fill each Tuesday at Bar Open with brutal jubilations and textural exaltations.

The first week features three of Melbourne’s rowdiest ‘rock’ groups eschewing their usual composed fare for some intense indeterminacy with a special guest noisemaker each - with proto-metal boogie shredders Power featuring cacophonous guitar deity Dave Brown, post-punk-flavoured-garage punx Cable Ties featuring boyzIImencore tapemangler Llara Isabell Arena, and the recently resurfaced unrelenting noisecore devastation of Holy Boner (duo) featuring bonus electrodensities from Todd Anderson-Kunert and James Tolman.

Last weeks' gigs

Forgot to post about these last week... good gigs! Thanks to everyone involved!

The final Make It Up Club for 2015 features a motley crew of fourteen fine representatives from the myriad of Melbournian musicians who have bestowed the Club with aleatoric delights this year, congregating from their respective corners of the sonoverse to mutually revel in the splendour of spontaneous collaboration. Drawing on Annalee Koernig’s curatorial tactic for the Stutter Big Band of smashing together disparate improvisers adept at sensitive auditory engagement, participants from the new garde to the OG MIUC posse will utilise string, skin, wind and things to transmute slivers of mangled jazz, exquisite contemporary classical, brutal shitcore, lush drone, delectable noise, ecstatic psychedelia and boyzIImencore into a capriciously complex sonic entity attesting to the rich intricacy of our fertile local sonic terrain. There will be three sets of approximately 20 minutes length and no further imposed parameters, because improvisation and sonic liberation are awesome.

HOLY BONER @ MIUC - 25/03/2014

Expect nothing but aleatoric atrocities at MIUC this Tuesday as three scumcore groupings control sieges of sonic power to demonstrate the potential of extemporisation-as-Divine-Death and redefine the very concept of brutalissimo. First time make-it-uppers Pissbolt smash out of the prison-without-walls known as composed music to suffocate their kvlto thrash in a whirlwind of spontaneously unabated fury and flex their improv instincts of survival. Lo-fi parasites Peter Hyde, Chris Nylstoch and Sean Baxter (aka the heaviest new noisecore trio of 2013) grind past the point of no return in their sophomore blastfest sure to make Multinational Corporation-backed punks crap their dacks. And the polluted minds of Holy Boner inflict unquestionable suffering upon their anti-musical weaponry, with the common enemy of audial moderation well and truly within their auditory crosshairs.

•Pissbolt feat. S-Bolt (Roar), R-Bolt (Axe) & J-Bolt (Skins)

•Peter Hyde (Voice), Chris Nylstoch (Guitar) & Sean Baxter (Percussion)

•Holy Boner feat. Omad (Noisecore Vocals/Noise), Nik Kennedy (Modified Bass/Goregrind Vocals), Rod Cooper (Handmade Guitar/Noise) & Brad Smith (Drums/Grindcore Vocals)

Collab with Vijay Thillaimuthu @ MIUC - 25/02/2014

This installment of Make It Up Club is a selection of brutalissimo sound purveyors lurking across thresholds of various soundworlds in the electronic crud-smeared underbelly of Melbourne's DIY noise arena. With a unifying love of suffocating densities and sublime reverberant immersion, Vijay Thillaimuthu's high-ish electrowizardry aesthetic and Nik Kennedy's low-ish scumcore sonic strategy render such descriptive dichotomies utterly irrelevant. Wikipedia defines Nathan Gray as an artistic standard that describes a protocol, digital interface and connectors capable of manipulating a variety of electronic musical instruments, computers and other aleatoric sources into connecting and communicating with one another. And the post-grim powered electronics of Ciarán Geoghegan will be wilfully smashed into the robust industrial-strength ambience borne of Todd Anderson-Kunert's electric assemblage, in a supercollision of extreme frequencies.

KNIGHT/FIECK/KENNEDY @ MIUC - 11/02/2014

This Tuesday at the Make It Up Club prepare to get blasted into the electronic realm of the sonoverse as six electrifying young circuitry abusers inflict their will upon the speaker cones of Bar Open, your ears and brains. A first-time trio of epic sonic proportions, namely firebrand aural punishers Carey Knight, Samaan Fieck & Nik Kennedy, will rain molten detritus of mangled frequencies triggered by years of being called 'emerging artists'. Travis John presents a systematic and methodical torture session for guitar, wreaking intense sonic pressure on a robustly resonant body to evoke skull-splintering drones from a simple combination of string, pickup and amp. And scumcore noise brutalisers Harriet Morgan and Luke Holland channel analog scree as Armour Group, scouring the aether of the ancient occult, antediluvian war and archaic historical sources for sonic insight.

COLLAB WITH ANTHEA CADDY @ MIUC - 28/01/2014

This Tuesday is your last chance to aleatorically party on down for the Make It Up Club's sweet 16th birthday with our final four groups, representing three continents of sonic vocabulary, further fostering intercultural collaboration via communicatory spontaneous music creation and mutual construction of transcendent textures. Melbournian diasporic cellist Anthea Caddy returns to the MIUC stage on her yearly jaunt home from Berlin to the motherland for a clash of string and vocal resonance with oral force of nature Nik Kennedy to round out a killer month of rarefied cross-cultural collaborations. It has also been two years since American modular maven Ben Vida blasted dense synthetic frequency clusters at the architecture of Bar Open, but in 2014 he's here to celebrate improvisation by affecting and reacting to the patch pin matrix, knob and joystick manipulations of Mathew Watson to co-create some layered electronic ecstasy. We also have a first time Make It Up Clubber in British vocalist Viv Corringham, a notional storyteller of lingual deconstruction and textural liberation, ably welcomed to the environs of Melbournian improv by local legend and ambassador-of-impromptu Dave Brown. And a cavalcade of free jazz firebrands corralled by living luminary Kris Wanders and featuring double bassist Slawek Janicki, saxophonist Brett Evans, drummer Damien Ellis & keyboardist Jude Russel, contextualise that the MIUC would probably be nonexistent were it not for Ornette's actions over 50 years ago.

•Anthea Caddy [MEL/BER] (Cello) & Nik Kennedy (Voice)

•Ben Vida [US] (Modular Synth) & Mat Watson (Synthi AKS)

•Viv Corringham [UK] (Voice) & Dave Brown (Guitar, Objects)

•Kris Wanders (Saxes), Slawek Janicki (Double Bass), Brett Evans (Saxes), Damien Ellis (Drums), Jude Russel (Korg)

DEATH BY CONES @ MIUC 15th Anniversary - 15/01/2013

7.30pm Doors for an 8pm-sharp start.
The MIUC's 15th birthday celebrations kick off this Tuesday with five suitably diverse groupings - traversing the inaudible to the deafening, the organic to the processed, the tonal to the textural - all the while celebrating the sheer joy that is improvised music! A tip of the hat to MIUC's free jazz roots with the old-and-new-garde grouping of Ren WaltersJames McleanScott McConnachieBrett Evans andChristopher Young kicks off proceedings; with the speaker-shredding aural violence that is Death By Cones quickly following to ensure you know for sure it's 2013. Two of the most beautiful extended voices in Melbourne, Carolyn Connors and Emma Albury, as well as two of the most terrifyingly grimm extended voices in Melbourne, Emma Albury and the entity known as Voidhanger, team up with the terrifyingly beautiful guitar of Alex Garsden for a cult collaboration of the most brutal/beautiful/brutiful kind. Bum Creek and Wife revive their awesomely confusing and confusingly awesome battle royale/collaboration for those unfortunate enough to have missed it at MIUC in early 2012. Finally, renowned French turntablist and 'musical travel agent' Philippe Petit goes head to head with Canberran guitarist Shoeb Ahmad for a world-class set of improv that should prove to be as deep, dark and immense as the Indian Ocean that usually separates the two.

- Philippe Petit (France) and Shoeb Ahmad (Canberra)
- Bum Creek vs. Wife feat. Trevelyan Clay, Sam Karmel, Tarquin Manek, Samaan Fieck and Eric Demetriou
- Voidhanger, Emma Albury, Carolyn Connors and Alex Garsden
- Death By Cones feat. Nik Kennedy, Phillip Holquinn, Mark Groves and Mark Skelton
- Ren Walters, James Mclean, Scott McConnachie, Brett Evans and Christopher Young

Seriously humongous and gracious thanks to Sean Baxter, Stephen Richards, Lloyd Honeybrook, Kerrie Farnsworth, previous organises, supporters and everyone at Bar Open for keeping Make It Up Club running all these years. I first experienced MIUC as a performer in 2007. Having never really played completely unplanned live improvised music before, Sean threw me into a group with Robbie Avenaim, Max Kohane and Ray Ahn and effectively re-configured my perspective on what music can be. Through MIUC, I've been fortunate enough to see countless mind-blowing performances, introduce new people to improvised music, collaborate with a variety of fantastic people, and have an invaluable outlet for experimentation and new ideas. Going to MIUC gigs as a punter, there's an atmosphere of community and respect that makes it unlike any other gig around. Always a rewarding and fun experience.

Thanks heaps dudes!!

DEATH BY CONES @ MIUC - 26/06/2012

Next up at MIUC we focus on sonic abstraction utilising density-variation from analogue sources. The 13th annual Liquid Architecture festival of sound arts is upon us again, and thanks to LA, we have one of their featured artists, visionary Berlin-based improviser and sound sculptor Werner Dafeldecker, performing in collaboration with Melbourne’s Sean BaxterDeath By Cones, a monstrous quartet exploring the physical limits of the speaker cone, featuring four experts in the field of brutal noise. And, a duo of sublime, psychoacoustic energy featuring Rodney J Cooper and Leith Thomas, employing 2 of Cooper’s hand-made creations.
• Werner Dafeldecker (Berlin) (live samper and tape delay) and Sean Baxter (percussive junk)
• Death By Cones, featuring: Mark Groves (brutal junk metal and electronic noise/Hartke amp), Nik Kennedy (brutal oral noise/Warwick amp), Tom Miller (brutal motor noise/Toilet amp) and Mark Skelton (brutal slut noise/Peavey amp)
• Rod Cooper (the lowrider and motorised strings) and Leith Thomas (leverage)

NGC 1275 debut gig @ MIUC - 06/03/2012

This week, we travel the sonic spaceways density and duration with some abstracted ambience, and some ferocious, classic free jazz. First up, a new duo from Nik Kennedy conceived as “otherworldly ambient atmospheres” with venerable guitarist Phillip Holquinn. And, Rory Brown’s return performance, this time leading a quartet of some of the fiercest and fieriest purveyors of the classic, post-Coltrane free jazz tradition.
• NGC 1275, featuring Nik Kennedy (voice/synths/electronics) and Phillip Holquinn (guitar/electronics)

THE SWAMP WITH STRINGS & PERCUSSION @ MIUC - 27/09/11

One of the most mind-blowing performances at MIUC earlier this year was The Swamp, a conceptual improvisation by Nik Kennedy featuring four grindcore vocalists utilising heavily processed voices through massive speakers. For this reprise, The Swamp is augmented by master junk percussion from Nat Grant and MV, and the grimcore cello aktions of Judith Hamann. And, a double treat from the North: No Anchor, Brisbane's finest no-core punknik's in extreme free improv mode, and the electroacoustic genius of Joe Musgrove, 1 half of internationally renowned audio-video abstraktionists, Botborg.

+ The Swamp with strings and percussion, featuring: Brad Smith (vocals and electronics), Zev Langer (vocals and electronics), Jack Whitcroft (vocals and electronics), Nik Kennedy (vocals, bog sounds and electronics), Judith Hamann (cello), Maya-Victoria (percussion) and Nat Grant (percussion)

SPASMOSLOP (without) MILITARY POSITION @ Make It Up Club - 20/09/11

Melbourne art-punk, Harriet Morgan, has been collaborating with Nik Kennedy for some time now, and their musical communication has become empathic. Employing sub bass drones and processes voice, the group creates whirlwinds of noise. Wank Bank is the new shitcore project started by Tommy Gunn, and promises faux goregrind, improvised toilet noise. And master experimental percussionist, Robbie Avenaim returns to Melbourne for a rare solo treat. A night of intense, shitcore inspired, avant improv.

SPASMOSLOP/CANDLESNUFFER collab @ Make It Up Club - 13/09/11

This week sees the continuation of our profile of Nik Kennedy in a collaboration with Dave Brown. This performance focuses on Kennedy's use of home-made instruments, employing metal, breath, hydrophonics and effects, with Brown in full, macrosonic Candlesnuffer mode. Axximilation is a raw analogue duo featuring two young women who consistently impress with their novel deconstructions of punk-inspired improv. And Sydney-based experimental musician, Sam Pettigrew features in a duo with Ben Byrne, incorporating bass and laptop in an empathic improvised musique concrete milieu.
  •  Nik Kennedy (sub bass processed voice, homemade instruments, electronics and effects) and Dave Brown (macrosonically effected electric guitar)
  •  Axximilation, featuring: Pandie Panther and Battle Pussy (drum kit, voice, tapes, laptop and distortion)

UMBILICAL TENTACLE @ Make It Up Club - 06/09/11

September sees a month of shows featuring Nik Kennedy, one of Melbourne's most exciting and inventive noise improvisers in four unique combinations. For his first performance, he is joined by long-time collaborators, Yuka Mikayama and Brad Smith in a chaotic, ecstatic and joyfully stupid project of partynoisecoremania. Sam Dunscombe convenes a trio of very recent group explorations into the “labyrinthine dungeons” of MaxMSP audio coding language (as he refers to it). Along with Jess Pinney and Kim Tan, the trio juxtaposes the warm and the cold, the fake and the real, the abstracted and the empathic, the clinical and the emotional potentials of this amazing digital tool. And, with immense pleasure, we welcome cornetist Felicity Provan back to Melbourne for a brief visit from her home in the Netherlands. A champion of abstract improv, free and modern jazz in Melbourne during the 80s and 90s, she is joined by Dutch colleague, improv legend and current Australian resident, Cor Fuhler

THE SWAMP @ Make It Up Club - 19/07/11

 Tuesday July 19th, 2011

Subsonic timbres and gurgling textures feature in this week's concert. The debut performance of a new realtime processing/diatonic feedback project from Terry McDermott and Piers Morgan. And Sydney emigre, Milica Stefanovic makes her MIUC solo debut, with extended and abstracted electric bass guitar.

RCKTSRGRY @ Make It Up Club - 15/03/11

Breath and the occult art of the ancient XYZ coordinate radiomap feature in this week's concert. Sydney voice artist Tony Osborne returns with his extended, jumbled and reconfigured explorations of the possibilities of vocal enunciation and (in)communicative action. RCKTSRGRY make a rare appearance that expands the limits of the space/time/sound intra-dimension. And the raw power of really smooth screeching/howling by local voice-master, Shane Van Den Akker.
